Cold front was the
story at the stage at this years 2nd annual Border Walleye
Challenge. The tournament that was originally scheduled for Sat.
was postponed until Sunday due to nearly of foot of blowing snow
and icy roads. South Dakota was again the winner of the challenge
lead by Dan Sunne and Lance Hamman of Milbank South Dakota with
their catch of 6 walleyes for 15.35 pounds for a payday of
$2,500. They reported catching their big basket in the Mallard
Point area and north casting a jig and minnow in less than 2 feet
of water. It was a close battle for 2nd and 3rd place with Eric
Holm and Aaron Wells with 12.59 pounds and Derrick Wenck and Ryan
Steege with 12.43 pounds. Both of these teams were anchored
on the same point north of Sodak and they caught their fish
casting crankbaits in less than 2 feet of water. The largest
walleye of the tournament was caught by local anglers Marty Brown
and Josh Berger of Ortonville, Mn. They caught 1 walleye for 4.83
pounds netting them nearly $1000. Overall it was a very tough
bite as only 35 of 150 teams were able to catch fish. The Border
Walleye Challenge was made possible by the Big Stone Walleye Club
and many great sponsors. For more information and pictures go to
